Dido and Aeneas in Concert

H. Purcell Dido and Aeneas

Saturday 9 February 2019, 8pm

Pembroke College Chapel

Admission Free

Dorian Chamber Orchestra perform Henry Purcell's only full opera, Dido and Aeneas, by candlelight in the atmospheric surroundings of Pembroke College Chapel, Cambridge. This work has long been a staple of the Baroque opera repertoire and here we present it in a stripped down form with single players per part in an intimate concert performance.

This Opera seems to have been written for young voices and this performance will feature some of the best singers from across a wide range of the Cambridge college choirs: perfectly showcasing some of the top singing talent in Cambridge.

Dorian Chamber Orchestra presents an exciting programme of music spanning the styles of the Viennese masters and beyond, performed by some of the best young musicians in London in the beautiful setting of St George's Bloomsbury.

Glichrist's new work, commissioned by the orchestra, provides contrast in a concert otherwise consisting of two of Haydn and Schubert's most pastoral symphonies which provide rousing and heart-warming music for the depths of the English winter.

Josquin and J.S. Bach

Josquin Missa Pange Lingua

J.S. Bach BWV 21 Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis

Trinity College Chapel, Cambridge

28 October 2018, 8:30pm

Tickets £8/£5 on the door

The 2018-2019 Concert Series begins with a programme of works by two composers who have come to epitomize their respective idioms.

Josquin's Missa Pange Lingua is an important example of Josquin's mature style. This paraphrase mass takes the Pange Lingua hymn which Josquin quotes and reworks throughout.

J.S. Bach's early Cantata Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis displays the influence of the many different styles that would later be immortalized in the better-known Passions and B Minor Mass. The modal (Dorian) inflection of the harmony shows the continuing blurred lines between diatonic and modal tonality in the Baroque style, while his use of the recitative and da capo aria structure is an early example of Bach's incorporation of Italian operatic influences into his cantatas.
